Many states—and most states in the PJM region—have Renewable Portfolio Standards, which are requirements for how much electricity sold in the state must be produced from renewable or alternative sources. To meet these goals, electricity suppliers can purchase Renewable Energy Certificates, or RECs as they are commonly called, from electricity generators that use renewable resources.
PJM’s newly produced video, “Creating a Renewable Energy Certificate,” explains how the REC process works and how they are used to satisfy state renewable energy goals. The video, which is on PJM’s channel on YouTube, is also embedded within the PJM Learning Center section of pjm.com. The Learning Center features other videos, fact sheets, FAQs and resources to help understand the grid, wholesale power market, smart grid technology, renewables and more.
